What I Learned About Social Media Marketing

Social Media is Today’s Billboard

Its no surprise that social media has caught on so much these days in everyone’s personal life but when it comes down to business, its key to have a social presence.

In this post I will explain some of the most beneficial things I have taken away from my Social Media Marketing course which i have taken this Spring 2016 semester at The Monfort College of Business here in lovely Northern Colorado.

1. Make your presence known!

Being a physical business is the easy part. Making your presence known to the right target market online is where it gets tricky, but is necessary in today’s business world. When it comes down to social media, this can be achieved in many ways from advertising to specific customers or even offering customer service. When it comes to sites like Twitter and LinkedIn though a good way to generate more traffic to your business is to get a mention or have your business featured in an online publication. The problem here however is, that its difficult to do! The trick I have learned is to be persistent and consistent with your efforts throughout multiple social media platforms, and it will pay off with web page traffic to get you and your business known!

2. Figure out the best time to post.

Timing is key in most aspects of life just like with advertising and brand building. If you are trying to advertise to reach out to specific people, then you must post at the most optimum times when they are using them. Consider the fact that 80% of the United States population is in the Eastern and Central time zones and your goal is to reach them but you may live in California. Most people use social media from 12 pm to 6 pm which would mean you need to be posting content anywhere between 9 am to 3 pm which can be tough for someone who may have to balance work and home life or two jobs perhaps. This is where a platform such as Hootsuite comes in handy. You are able to schedule your posts to go up at certain times and not all at once so people aren’t flooded with your content and have time to look at them more thoroughly. This alone will increase traffic, generate followers, and increase engagement.

3. Post evergreen content.

The best content to post is always evergreen content which is considered long lasting and sustainable while continuing to be relevant to your followers long after its publication. It’s a good idea to keep a sorted list of your “evergreen” content which you have published, and re-publish them on a sporadic and rotational basis to help keep your different social media profiles generating updates, and this will maximize the long-term value received from satisfied customers and followers. The tough part is to time your posts so people don’t get sick of seeing the same post over and over which is when you begin loosing followers so be careful! What’s best about this though is that it isn’t an overly time consuming or budget breaking method to better brand building.

Takeaway

I have learned so much about marketing with social media and it truly is a great way to build your brand and personal learning network in order to successfully market over different platforms. The three things I found to be the most detrimental are having a well known online presence, knowing the best times t post to your audience, and making sure to post evergreen content for your followers.

Finding inspiration from great leaders

Leadership Defines Success

We all have had people in our lives that inspire us. They push us to do the things we may think are impossible but give us motivation to prove that idea wrong.

In this blog I am going to explain the three leaders which have been most influential to me and why they are great at inspiring me to be successful.

1. Steve Jobs

Just about everyone knows who Steve Jobs is and it is mostly due to his success with Apple. He was a very unconventional leader who demanded excellence and was very upfront with his criticism. The reason however that he is an inspiration to me is his ability to deliver and articulate a vision to all of his followers which made the man so successful. He was simply a genius who was so determined to succeed, he used the hard lessons he had learned while away from Apple, and used them as an asset to build the company to the huge business we all know today. Dr Brent Coker from the University of Melbourne’s management and marketing faculty describes Jobs as “one of the greatest business strategists of all times” which is why he tops my list of the most inspirational.

2. Richard Branson- @richardbranson

When we talk about leaders, another big name that always comes to my mind is Richard Branson. He is best known as the founder of the Virgin Group which today has over 400 companies. This man is truly an inspiration to anyone who has an entrepreneurial spirit because of his many many successes and failures when it comes to opening businesses. At the age of 16 his first business venture was a magazine called Student, then in the 1970’s he became successful with a record group known as Virgin Records. Shortly after in 1984, Virgin Atlantic Airways was created and this started him off to become a highly successful billionaire worth around $5 billion USD. Not only does his success with businesses inspire me to be the best, but also his free spirited attitude and friendly demeanor that he has towards all employees reminds me that a business does not need to be ran with an iron fist.  One of my favorite quotes from Branson is “My interest in life comes from setting myself huge, apparently unachievable challenges and trying to rise above them … from the perspective of wanting to live life to the full, I felt that I had to attempt it.”

3. Warren Buffet

Warren Buffet is another big inspiration to me and is known as the worlds most successful investor and ranks at the top of most wealthy people in the world. The one thing i truly admire the most about him is that even with such a massive amount of money, he still remains humble and stays very reserved. I feel like this is the best way that any leader can cultivate loyal followers because it not only lets them see that you are a success, but also that you are willing to care about other people.

Takeaway

As with all leaders, there are many characteristics which make them good or bad depending on the situation. With the three that I picked as my most inspirational there are different reasons i feel they are the best. Steve Jobs had a very bad leadership style but was highly successful because of his inspiring ideas. Richard Branson had a lot of failures but learned from them and found success. Warren Buffet is the third person I see as most inspiring because of his attitude towards people even though he has become so wealthy.

Everyone feels differently about ideal leaders and I would love to hear opinions, favorite leaders, or comments in the section below!

Followers and Employees vs. Leaders and Managers

I have spent about four years in and out of the construction industry and as a result I have realized what it takes to go from an effective manager to an effective leader. There is a big difference when it comes to the two. The biggest one would be that managers are more focused on people that work FOR them whereas a leader will focus on people that FOLLOW them and there are many more.

Check out this article that explains more differences!

Support and Collaboration

But anyways, back to my point, when in a position of power or authority one must think about the long term goals and mission of the company. If focused on short term benefits and working in defined boundaries is the preference, then you might not be cut out to be a leader.  I have had multiple people work for me before and have had people follow me and the fact is, that when they follow you there is support and collaboration rather than simple minded employees only doing what they are told. This may sound like a good relationship to have when doing construction on certain projects like pre-built model homes but the houses we were building at this time were far from cookie cutter models. These houses were custom built mansions and required detailed work while thinking outside the box to solve the problems that arise. Well, when leading a team of three, you want to inspire the different thinking and push for innovation and more efficient ways of getting stuff done. So I did and the benefits were obvious.

The Difference is Real

This is when I noticed the difference between the two and decided to become a leader as a manager, not for only myself, but for the company I was working, the followers I developed, and the people I would work with in the future. I knew that if I wanted to one day own my own company and be the successful entrepreneur that I strive to be, then simply having people who “work for me” wouldn’t cut it. I needed to be able to express my vision to followers and communicate effectively, otherwise it would fail as quickly as it began.

Takeaway

I have not yet opened my own, but with my previous experiences learning about how important it is to become an effective leader and manager, I am hoping to one day have the world’s best custom built house developer who has a construction site full of enthusiastic followers.
